You don’t need to be a roofing expert to have heard about shingles before. Roof shingles are a typical roof covering consisting of individual overlapping elements, typically flat rectangles laid in an overlapping series beginning from the lower edge of the roof upwards towards the top Each successful row contains joint sections below. While roofing shingles can derive from several types of roofing materials, the most popular type of roofing shingles are asphalt shingles. In fact, asphalt shingles cover about 80% of all homes in the United States. Asphalt shingles are popular due to their lightweight, easy installation, and relatively low cost. In this article, we will discuss asphalt shingles and how they get produced.
How Are Asphalt Shingles Made?
An individual asphalt shingle is typically made up of fiberglass, granules, asphalt, and the release film. The fiberglass is responsible for reinforcing the asphalt shingles, while the asphalt is what gives the shingles their water-resistant properties, and the granules are there to provide the color. The sealants are then used to bind the roof shingles together, so they remain intact.
The production process begins by dry looping, which takes a jumbo roll of fiberglass mat and presses it through a dry looper. The base material then goes through a pre-saturation chamber where it is diffused on one side with hot asphalt to remove any moisture that is present. This material is then soaked in the asphalt coats to fill the void between the coat and the mat.
Next, wet looping occurs when the asphalt coating on the mat cools to create a more substantial saturation. Then, the asphalt coating becomes stabilized by powdered minerals. Then the mat passes through coating rolls which get separated by a reasonable distance to ensure a sufficient amount of coating asphalt is applied to the mat.
After completing the coating process, granules of ceramic-coated minerals of the desired color get applied to the mat’s surface. The sheet of the treated mat will then go through a series of rollers that put the coating particles into the asphalt so the material can cool off. The strip of finished shingle material is then put into a cutting machine to cut it into the desired size and shape.
Finally, the machine stacks the shingles into bundles, where they get transferred to a piece of equipment that wraps them and gives them labels. Then the shingles are sent off to many locations across the country to be used in local neighborhoods such as your own.
